How to study for the USMLE Step 1?

I’ve already helped over 100 students PASS Step 1!

Having a solid strategy and a well-optimized study routine is essential for success in the process of revalidating your medical degree in the United States. After taking both Step 1 and Step 2CK of the USMLE myself during my clinical years in med school—and after completing four extracurricular rotations in the U.S., including one at the Cleveland Clinic (one of the top hospitals in the world)—I realized I could help students who also wanted to go through this process.

I’ve been a Step 1 study mentor since 2021, and during this time, I’ve noticed several common challenges that students face when they begin preparing for this exam.

The most recurring challenge? Incorporating a new study routine into an already busy life. Most people preparing for Step 1 are juggling their studies with other responsibilities—clinical years or internships, hospital shifts, clinic hours… not to mention personal life! In other words: balancing life and responsibilities with a brand-new study routine for the USMLE is absolutely a challenge.

So how do you overcome that initial hurdle? With knowledge.

Knowing your own routine very well is key to building a consistent study plan.

When you decide to pursue degree revalidation, keep in mind that it’s a process that demands dedication and high-quality study time, because you’ll need to take the USMLE exams: starting with Step 1, then Step 2CK (and later, Step 3). There’s no way around it—you’ll need to make room in your schedule and adjust to this new routine. To make that possible, I always walk my mentees through what I believe to be the simplest and most effective approach.

The first task:

Write down all your fixed commitments—shifts, med school, extra classes.

Then, list out essential one-off obligations: doctor’s appointments, workouts, therapy…

Lastly, include important (but flexible) events: birthdays, social events.

Once you do that, you’ll discover how much free time you actually have. That’s when you can start structuring your routine with rest, training, and study blocks.

And remember: during this stage, your study time needs to be a priority.

With this macro view of your schedule, you can now set realistic study goals—this is a key point.

Many students come to me frustrated that they’re not making as much progress as they’d like. But in most cases, it’s not a matter of dedication—it’s about setting realistic expectations based on their actual routine.

Be patient!

It’s hard in the beginning, no doubt. Everyone who has passed the exams felt the same way.

Here are a few tips:

Tip 1: If possible, start studying during a less hectic time at work or during your school break. It’ll help you adapt more easily to the new routine.

Tip 2: Begin with a subject you like. Even if it’s difficult, it’ll feel less emotionally draining.

Tip 3: Don’t skip Anki! It’s a lifesaver—and might be the most powerful tool in helping you achieve your dream. The ability to retain content using Anki daily is infinitely greater than studying without it (this advice comes from someone who didn’t use Anki for Step 1, but did for Step 2CK and Step 3).

Wishing you great studies and the best of luck!
